VILLAGE OFFICERS

§ 26. Engineer
The Engineer, and in his or her absence the Assistant Engineer next in authority,
shall have power, at times of fire, to suppress tumults and riots by force, if necessary,
to direct the labor of all persons present during the continuance of such fires, remove
all effects endangered by such fires, and protect the same from waste and depredation,
to pull down or remove any house or store, or other building, where he or she may
deem it necessary to prevent the spreading of such fires, for which he or she or those
assisting him or her shall not be held responsible; and to require of the inhabitants
of said Village their aid and assistance for the several purposes aforesaid; and said
engineers may inspect the manner of manufacturing and keeping gunpowder, lime, ashes,
matches, lights, fireworks of all kinds, and other combustibles, and the construction
and repairs of fireplaces, stoves, and chimneys, in said Village, and a majority of
said engineers may, if they deem the same dangerous, order in writing the persons
manufacturing such gunpowder, lime, ashes, matches, lights, fireworks, or combustibles
in what manner to manufacture, and keep the same; and every person neglecting to obey
such orders shall be fined not exceeding $20.00.
