Biography
CAROLYN BRANAGAN is a lifelong Vermonter, born in Windsor, grew up on a dairy farm, and as a child attended public schools. She graduated from the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont (BS 1976 and MEd 1984). After graduation, she taught elementary school in Fairfax and Fairfield, Vermont, and eventually became the grade school principal in Fairfield, Vermont. She has served as trustee of the Vermont Historical Society, former trustee of the University of Vermont, treasurer and chair of the Franklin County Republican Committee, member Vermont Legislative Women’s Caucus, past trustee and chair of the Vermont Maple Festival, past trustee and treasurer for Martha’s Kitchen (free soup kitchen), trustee Samaritan House (homeless shelter), trustee Franklin County Home Health, and member Friends of Northern Lake Champlain. She is past member and chair of Georgia (Vermont) School Board, Georgia Town History Editor, and Georgia Historical Society; past member and chair of the Georgia Select Board; and is the current Georgia Town Moderator. She is a lifelong member of the Georgia Plain Baptist Church where she has served as Deacon, Supt. of Sunday School, church treasurer, and on several committees. In 2010, she was chosen Vermont Mother of the Year. Carolyn Branagan served as State Representative for the Franklin-1 district and was the Franklin County State Senator from 2002 until 2018, when she was diagnosed with cancer and did not run for re-election. When she recovered, she ran again for the Vermont House of Representatives in 2022 and still serves there. Carolyn Branagan is married to Chris Branagan, CPA. They have three grown children and three grandchildren and live in Georgia, Vermont, where they produce award-winning, pure Vermont maple syrup.
