Biography
BARBARA RACHELSON has lived in Vermont since 1991. She grew up in North Caldwell, New Jersey. Barbara attended West Essex High School, Brandeis University (BA, sociology) and the University of Michigan School of Social Work (MSW in policy and planning). She is married to Don Loeb and the mother of Isaac Loeb-Mullin and Aviva Loeb. Barbara teaches a class at the University of Vermont on Nonprofits and Social Change and is the part-time Executive Director of a national nonprofit, ConnectMyVariant, which works to end hereditary disease. She has 40 years of experience working in nonprofit organizations, and 33 years of that time in the role of an executive director including: Interim Executive Director of the Epilepsy Foundation of Vermont; The Executive Director of Lund; and Executive Director, Michigan Network of Runaway, Homeless and Youth Services. She was the Director of Outpatient Services at The Counseling Service of Addison County; Director of Program Development at Spectrum Youth Services and Program Director of DTA, a runaway/homeless youth shelter in Detroit, MI. Barbara was a legislative aide for the Michigan House of Representatives’ Judiciary Committee; an LBJ intern for Congressman Joseph Minish (NJ), and an intern for the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency. Barbara is on the board of Human Rights for Kids, and a commissioner for the Burlington Parallel Justice Commission. Her prior board service includes the ACLU of Vermont, Fletcher Allen Health Care, and the Vermont Children’s Forum. She was appointed and served on the Vermont Committee for Child, Adolescent, and Family Mental Health and the Ann Arbor Human Rights Commission. Barbara was a 2016 CSG National Toll Fellow and a 2014 CSG-Eastern Region Thompson Fellow.
