Biography
MARYBETH CHRISTIE REDMOND, of Essex, Chittenden County, Democrat, was raised in Brightwaters, N.Y. From childhood, every holiday and vacation were spent on the Vermont ski slopes or trekking through Okemo State Forest, cementing her love of the Green Mountain State. She received her BA from the University of Notre Dame and an MA from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. She began her career as an on-air television reporter in Indiana, with later stints in Long Island and Connecticut TV markets. Her professional interests have always centered on using public communications to advocate for vulnerable, underrepresented people and communities. Marybeth and her family relocated to Vermont in 2003. For six years, she taught journalism and digital reporting at St. Michael's College. She served briefly as executive director of Dismas of Vermont, providing transitional housing for Vermonters rejoining communities from prison. From 2010-2014, she co-founded a program for the state’s incarcerated women called writing inside VT, using writing as a tool for self-change; this effort resulted in a nationally published book of the women’s poetry and prose, entitled “Hear Me, See Me” in 2013. Marybeth also directed development and communications efforts at Vermont Works for Women, a nonprofit organization training unemployed women for successful livable wage work (2013-2016). She served on the Vermont Commission on Women (2017-2020) and was a partner with Vermont Story Lab, training nonprofit communicators to weave storytelling through the fabric of their organizations to increase impact and reach (2016-2021). She is an ordained interfaith minister and lives in Essex with her husband, Mark Redmond, executive director of Spectrum Youth and Family Services, and their son.
