Biography
TOMMY J. WALZ of Barre City, Washington County, Democrat, was born in Bangor, grew up in Veazie, ME, and graduated from Orono High School as the valedictorian of his class. He graduated from Bowdoin College with an AB in German and from the Middlebury German Language School with an MA. He first came to Barre City to teach English and German at Spaulding High School. That was the beginning of a total of 35 years as a teacher and school administrator. He retired as the IT Director of the Barre Supervisory Union in 2008. He and his wife have lived in Germany, Maine, and various communities in Vermont. Rep. Walz has served on the boards of Spaulding High School, the Barre Supervisory Union, the League of Vermont Writers, the Barre Lions Club, the Aldrich Public Library, the Members Advantage Community Credit Union, the Granite City Grocery, the People’s Health and Wellness Clinic, and Central Vermont Habitat for Humanity. He served as co-chair of the Barre Act 46 Study Committee. He was appointed in April 2014 to fill a vacancy in the House and was reelected four times since. He serves on the Committee on General, Housing, and Military Affairs.
