- VALERIE A. STUART of Brattleboro, Windham County, Democrat, was born in Smyrna, Tennessee. She graduated from Rye High School and attended Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg, Virginia (sister school, University of Virginia). After transferring to New York State University College at Oneonta, she spent her junior year abroad at the International Institute in Madrid, Spain. She graduated with honors (BA, literature and Spanish). Valerie worked in New York City for 14 years, first as an editor of a graphic design magazine, and then as the partner in charge of marketing at a leading brand and corporate identity firm. She moved to Vermont from Pelham, New York, with her husband, attorney John Mabie, and their two young children, Ian and Lauren. Since that time, she has worked as a public relations, marketing, and fundraising consultant or staff member for various organizations, including Healthcare & Rehabilitation Services, the Student Conservation Association, Strolling of the Heifers, Vermont Land Trust, World Learning, and Youth Services. She is a founder and current member of the Brattleboro Sunrise Rotary Club as well as a member of the Windham County Hunger Council and the Southeastern Vermont Economic Development Strategies' Economic Development Committee. She is on the advisory boards of the Brattleboro Film Festival, West Brattleboro Association, and the Vermont Performance Lab. She formerly served as a trustee and president of the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center and a trustee of the Governor's Institutes of Vermont. Member of the House Education Committee: 2011-2012, 2013-2014.
