Biography
JOANNA COLE of Burlington, Chittenden County, Democrat, was born in Troy, NY. Before becoming a State Legislator, she was a college chemistry and biology teacher, researcher and parent. She attended Guilderland, NY, schools, moved to Mohegan Lake and upper Westchester County's Lakeland High School. Then she went on to Denver University and took time out to start a family. She returned to Gaston College for an AAS, University of North Carolina Charlotte for a BS chemistry, UNCC for her Master's work in biology, Bryn Mawr College, and Drew University for Theological Studies. She taught at Lebanon Valley College, Millerville University, and Bryn Mawr College. She has broad experience from living in many places, including Puerto Rico and Alaska. She lives with her spouse, Sarah Flynn, and their two cats. Adult children are grown and far away. Rep. Cole continues to serve as a Justice of the Peace. She formerly served on the Burlington Board for the Registration of Voters, State Board for the League of Women Voters, Vermont Commission on Women Advisory Board for the LWV, National Alliance on Mental Illness of Vermont Board and Teacher, Department of Mental Health Transformation Council, DMH Secure Recovery Residence Task Force and Criminal Justice Mental Health Task Force. She is also a former Steering Committee Member and Chair of Neighborhood Planning Assembly for Burlington Wards 4 and 7.
